A glittering crystal ball sits next to a deck of laid-out tarot cards in a TikTok video. Each mystical card promises to predict the murky fortune for emotionally-invested viewers. An admirer has become bewitched by your charming presence. An old flame is rekindled. A prosperous career promising wealth is within arms grasp. All in exchange for likes, shares and claiming the good energy emanating from these supposed psychic readings meant just for you.

But, these high hopes come crashing down when viewers believe every inaccurate detail spewn from the mouths of tarot card readers on social media. TikTok users do not miraculously scroll onto tarot readings by fateful chance, but because of sly algorithms. These users are led astray, constantly liking tarot card reading videos, thus shaping the Tiktok algorithm and feeding into a loophole of eye-pulling content.

These quick 15-second to three-minute tarot readings, where a deck of illustrated cards are used to tell the future, can be detrimental to audiences’ mental health. By asking users to indulge in snippets that resonate with them or to interact with the video to claim the fortune, most TikTok tarot readings only seek out more viewership to gain popularity rather than offering honest readings. It is a cheap way out — basically the tarot reader warns viewers, “If something doesn’t apply to you, just ignore it.” These tarot card reading teases instill harmful mindsets for users as their wishes lead to obsessions and despair.

Users become engrossed by generalized readings including “they’ll come back when it’s time,” “they’re thinking of you but too afraid to make the first move” or “they know they messed up, but they’re too afraid to apologize.” However, internalizing tarot card readings can backfire. These superficial and broad readings could likely create false closure or spark a reinvestment in a toxic relationship.

It may seem like destiny when a video with millions of views pops up on your feed and spells out your exact situation and tells you what you need to hear. But, these videos are not personalized by spiritual chances.

These hypnotizing tarot card reading videos are clout chasing. Trending tags, such as #tarotreading, #psychicreading and #witchtok, continue to swell in popularity. As users obsessively interact with tarot videos with similar tags, the more frequently the videos pop up on their feed. It’s not a coincidence that three tarot readings appear as copycats on TikTok’s For You Page; it’s the algorithm.

With one billion users and 63% of them under the age of 29, the young audience can be taught unhealthy coping mechanisms through false tarot readings. TikTok tarot readers need to be more conscientious of their audience who may be experiencing a whirlwind of emotions. Although some tarot readers become opportunistic of dispirited users, every point needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

TikTok should not be at fault and neither should users. There is no need to blame technology for humanity’s seemingly erratic social behavior. However, the Tiktok tarot card readers who constantly exploit their audience and persuade high engagement, are fostering a deceitful spiritual platform that disillusions users.

Although it’s enticing to hear about what your twin flame might be thinking, or if your best friend wants to apologize, virtual tarot readings are not trustworthy. They promote unhealthy visions for invested users, persuading them to manifest the desired person.

The reliance on misleading TikTok tarot card readers to predict the doom or destiny of users is unfulfilling. Instead, if users are determined to unearth their expectations for the future, they should either contact a local tarot card reader or take the initiative to learn to interpret tarot cards.

Psychic Marie, Psychic Readings by Grace and Fullerton Palm and Psychic are all located in Orange County, providing genuine one-on-one tarot card readings for curious individuals.

Viral TikTok algorithms do not have a say on your destiny, only fate does.
